Haiti earthquake / Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) Condolence letter

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, January 14, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Condolence letter sent to Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations, by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Mr. Jean Ping, in relation to the Haiti earthquake.

Dear Secretary-General,

It is with profound shock and sadness that I have learnt and seen the horrible images of the devastation caused by the earthquake that has just visited Haiti, particularly its capital city, Port-Au-Prince, and the surrounding areas.

It was equally shocking to learn about the collapse of the UN Building in Port-Au-Prince, under the weight of the earthquake and the loss of life among the UN personnel there and members of the UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti.

The earthquake hit Haiti at a time when the country was making progress in the social and economic fields, with the support of the United Nations through its peacekeeping mission in the country.

On my own behalf, and that of the AU Commission, I would like to convey our heartfelt condolences to the United Nations for the loss of life among its personnel, as well as to the families of the bereaved and those who have been injured in the earthquake and in its aftershocks.

Please, accept the assurances of my highest consideration.

Jean Ping

African Union Commission (AUC)
