Launch of the High level Panel Management Unit for Pan African University

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, October 13, 2009/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Launch of the High level Panel Management Unit for Pan African University

WHEN:      13th October 2009

WHERE:    Committee Room 3 – African Union Commission in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

WHO:         The African Union Commission, in particular the Department of Human Resources, Science and Technology

WHY:         There is an urgent need to produce more highly qualified scientists and technologists. At present, Africa is lagging behind the rest of the world in terms of its access to the knowledge society. This lack of access is determined by, and reflected in, Africa’s deficit in terms of the availability of qualified scientists and technologists. In sub-Saharan Africa, there is an average of 83 scientists and engineers per million inhabitants by region while in developed countries this rate climbs to 1102. The persistence of this deficit in the availability of qualified manpower in the areas of science and technology is a major factor in maintaining poverty in Africa. To address this challenge, the AU has launched a number of initiatives to re-vitalize African universities; the establishment of the Pan African University (PAU) is part of those actions. To develop and to make the concept of the PAU operational, a High Level Panel (HLP) will be set up to carry this work forward.

Journalists are kindly invited to attend the launching of the High Level Panel and the press conference. The ceremony is scheduled to take place from 14h30 to 16h30 on Tuesday 13th October 2009 at the AUC, Committee room 3.
