United Nations University (UNU), the Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (OSAA) and the Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (OHRLLS) are organizing a side event at the UN Conference on the World Financial and Economic Crisis and its Impact on Development entitled “Recovering from the Global Crisis: Towards an Action Plan for Africa and the Least Developed Countries“. The event will be held on Thursday, 25 June 2009, from 3:00pm to 6:00pm in the ECOSOC Chamber at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The keynote speaker at this event will be Asha-Rose Migiro, United Nations Deputy Secretary General. Other speakers will include: Dr. Dipu Moni, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh and Chair of the LDCs; Wim Naudé, UNU World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER); Abdalla Hamdok, Economic Commission for Africa (ECA); Stephen Groff, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, African Business Roundtable; and Roger Nord, International Monetary Fund (IMF). The event will be co-chaired by Cheick Sidi Diarra, Under Secretary-General, Special Adviser on Africa and High Representative for the LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS and Jean-Marc Coicaud, Director of the UNU Office in New York.

Many African countries and Least Developed Countries (LDCs) had on average, been growing at historically high growth rates prior to the global financial and economic crisis. The crisis threatens to reverse socio-economic progress in these regions if coherent and coordinated actions are not implemented in a timely fashion. This event will focus on three critical issues:

(1) Causes and impacts of the financial and economic crisis on Africa and the LDCs;

(2) Policy responses at the national and regional level; and

(3) Global responses to support the recovery of Africa and the LDCs from the crisis and laying the foundation for sustained growth and poverty reduction.

The event will consist of two conceptual/background papers, followed by a panel discussion.

All media are welcome to attend this event. Please register online at http://www.ony.unu.edu to confirm your presence and obtain passes to attend the event.
