U.S. Expresses Condolences on the Death of President El Hadj Omar Bongo Ondimba

The Government of the United States wishes to express its condolences to the family of his Excellency Omar Bongo Ondimba, and to the people and government of the Gabonese Republic following the death of President Omar Bongo Ondimba today. Africa has lost a leader who was dedicated to the cause of national and regional peace. Over a long career extending four decades, President Bongo tried to use his influence and that of his country to help resolve conflict throughout the continent of Africa. President Bongo will also be remembered for his commitment to conserve Gabon’s rich biodiversity and natural resources.
We now hope the transition of power following the president’s death will be peaceful and transparent and in accordance with the will of the Gabonese people.
