Building Peace and Security / German government / African Union joint statement



ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, April 28, 2009/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The German government has agreed to finance the construction of the new building for the Peace and Security Department of the African Union (AU) estimated to cost about 20 Million Euro. The new building will be centrally located on the grounds of the AU in Addis Ababa, adjacent to the AU’s new Conference Center.


In an open and transparent architectural competition in Berlin, 17 architects were invited to design the new building. The architectural designs for the new building will now be exhibited at the Africa Union Commission (AUC) Headquarters, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.


The modern and representative Peace and Security Building will be environmentally friendly and energy efficient. It will comprise approximately 11.500 m² gross floor area (GFA) and offer approximately 370 new jobs. GTZ was commissioned by the German Federal Foreign Office for the development and execution of the AU Peace and Security project.
