EU-UN-AU Conference on Somalia

 

 

BRUSSELS, Kingdom of Belgium, April 21, 2009/African Press Organization (APO)/ — JAVIER SOLANA, European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), will host a working lunch on Thursday, 23 April 2009 in the framework of the EUUNAU Conference on Somalia. Participants in the lunch will include UN Secretary-General BAN KI-MOON, SHEIKH SHARIFAHMED, President of Somalia, Mr JEAN PING, Chairperson of the African Union Commission and Mr LOUIS MICHEL, European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid.

 

The EU-UN-AU Conference on Somalia, to be held on Wednesday, 22 and Thursday, 23 April 2009, will discuss how the international community can best contribute to stabilizing the country, including by supporting the efforts of the African Union in Somalia. During the working lunch, the participants will review the latest developments in Somalia, particularly from the political and security perspectives.

 

The European Union is engaged with Somalia at the diplomatic, political, humanitarian and security levels, reflecting its commitment to the stabilization of Somalia. The EU is also leading a naval operation, EU NAVFOR Atalanta, to provide protection of World Food Programme (WFP) vessels delivering food aid to displaced persons in Somalia and to help deter, prevent and repress acts of piracy and armed robbery off the coast of Somalia.
