Africa-European Union Strategic Partnership Presented to European Parliamentarians

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, April 9, 2009/African Press Organization (APO)/ — A meeting to inform EU Parliamentarians on the Africa-European Union strategic partnership was held on Monday 6 April 2009, at the headquarters of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Initiated by the European Union delegation to the African Union and the President of the Czech Republic, the meeting was an opportunity for the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mr. Jean Ping, to share his vision on the partnership with parliamentarians gathered in Addis Ababa, within the framework of the Inter-Parliamentarian Union meeting.

« We have good cooperation ties with the European Union» Chairperson Ping said, adding that the Afro-European partnership is “fruitful, diversified and touches on several areas of cooperation”.

The AUC Chairperson also recalled that the Lisbon Summit during which the strategic Plan of Action was adopted has greatly boosted the relationship between Africa and the European Union: “I am happy that our cooperation ties have been reinforced”, he emphasized.

According to Chairperson Ping, the cooperation between Africa and the European Union has enabled the African Union to accomplish a number of programs which, left alone, the institution would not have achieved. To that effect, he called on Europe to maintain and consolidate its support in the different areas of cooperation.

With regard to the Copenhagen Summit on environment billed for next European autumn, Chairperson Ping explained that Africa will speak with one voice during the Summit. “We are preparing a common position for Africa” he underscored, adding that “for the first time, the African Union Commission would have to speak on behalf of the entire African continent ” Africa shall speak during the Copenhagen Summit with one voice” Chairperson Ping emphasized, while recalling that the rate of greenhouse gas emissions for Africa is only 3.8%”.

The Permanent Representative of the European Union delegation to the African Union, Koen Vervaeke, on his part said “this is a new partnership based on equitable management from both sides as well as joint responsibility. On the other hand, the partnership places the African Union at the centre of our relationship”, he added. He further recalled that there will be a first evaluation of the outcome of this partnership during the next Europe- Africa Summit scheduled to take place in 2010 in Libya.
