US Special Envoy meets with UNAMID officials


Newly appointed US Special Envoy to Sudan, General Scott Gration visited UNAMID headquarters today where he met with the Joint Special Representative, Mr. Rodolphe Adada and other senior officials. General Gration was accompanied by US chargé d’affaires, Mr. Alberto Fernandez.

During his visit, General Gration, had a meeting with UNAMID officials and was briefed on the overall political and humanitarian situation as well as the security situation in UNAMID area of responsibility.

AU high-level Panel for Darfur visit South Darfur
The African Union high-level panel travelled to the South Darfur Capital of Nyala today.

The panel led by forcer South African President, Mr. Thabo Mbeki and also comprising of former Burundian President, Mr. Pierre Buyoya and former Nigerian President, General Abdulsalami Abubakar had a meeting with the Wali (Governor) of South Darfur, Mr. Ali Mahmoud and other senior government officials in the state. They were briefed on the Darfur conflict including tribal conflicts in South Darfur and Government efforts in restoring peace and stability in the region.

Mr. Mbeki explained that the purpose of the visit was to listen to the people of Darfur, hear their concerns and their recommendations on the best way to reach a lasting peace in the region.

The AUPD visited Draij Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) Camp and had a briefing from the leader of the camp. The leader requested for food and basic services to be provided and also called on security for voluntary returnees.

The panel also met with UNAMID officials in South Darfur.
