Background

The Report, Assessing Progress towards Attaining the Millennium Development Goals in Africa, is prepared annually in response to African Union Heads of State and Government Summit Decisions to prepare status reports on progress in Africa towards attaining the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The first joint report was produced in 2007 and submitted to the 2007 UNECA Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development and subsequently to the African Union Summit held in July 2007.

Before the Joint report, the African Union Commission prepared the Review of the Millennium Declaration and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs):Towards an African Common Position following the Decision by the African Union Assembly of the 4th Ordinary Session, held from 30-31 January 2005, requesting the AU Commission to coordinate and lead the process of developing an African Common Position as the Continent’s contribution to the Report on the Review of the Millennium Declaration and the MDGs which was considered at a High-level Summit in September 2005.

Status reports prepared for 2007 and 2008 were submitted to the Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development without the participation of MDGs country experts. It was in light of this that it was considered necessary to involve country experts on MDGs in the process.
