Security Situation in Darfur

During the past 24 hours, the security situation in Darfur remained relatively calm, with banditry activities still prevalent in West Darfur.

Two unknown armed men yesterday broke into one of the UNAMID guest houses in Mournei, approximately 80 kms from the capital El Geneina, West Darfur, and demanded the keys of the two UNAMID vehicles parked in the compound.  The security officer at the guest house was able to get away and reported the incident to the Government of Sudan Police.  The bandits escaped with a VHF hand held radio and a DVD player.  No injuries were reported.  

UNAMID military conducted 23 confidence building patrols, 21 escort patrols and seven night patrols covering 43 villages/IDP Camps. Similarly, UNAMID police conducted 87 patrols in and around the villages and IDPs.

UN Under-Secretary-General for Field Support travels to South Darfur
Under-Secretary-General for Field Support, Ms. Susana Malcorra today travelled to the South Darfur capital, Nyala.  Upon her arrival, Ms. Malcorra paid a courtesy visit on the Wali (Governor) of South Darfur, Mr. Ali Mahmoud, where they discussed issues relating to the Mission.  He indicated that his government had approved land allocation for UNAMID in South Darfur.  The Wali reaffirmed his government’s commitment to cooperate with UNAMID and facilitate its work.  While in Nyala, Ms. Malcorra also met with UNAMID officials and toured the UNAMID facilities including the Pakistan Level III hospital where she was briefed on the construction work being done, as well as progress made.
