AfDB 2009 Annual Meetings Accreditation, Dakar, Senegal, May 10-14, 2009 / Message from Antoinette Batumubwira – External Relations and Communication Unit Head

DAKAR, Sénégal, March 26, 2009/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Message from Antoinette Batumubwira –
External Relations and Communication Unit Head :

Dear Colleague,

I am pleased to inform you that the 2009 Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group will take place this year in Dakar, Senegal, from May 10-14, 2009. We look forward to seeing you among media professionals who will cover this year’s event which will be held on the theme: Africa and the Financial Crisis: An Agenda for action”.

After a decade of continuous progress, which lays the basis for greater growth and real prospects for poverty reduction, Africa is, today, fully feeling the effects of the global financial crisis.

Gains made by the continent over the last ten years are, today, being undermined by factors beyond Africa’s control. While the initial effects of the global financial crisis were slow to manifest themselves on the continent, the impact is now becoming a lot clearer. The crisis is reducing trade, the mainstay of Africa’s recent strong growth.

These issues and others will be discussed during the Annual Meetings in Dakar.

If you decide to attend the Annual Meetings, Please send us the letter your media organization authorizes you to attend the event via e-mail at press@afdb.org or fax. We will then send you a personal code which will enable you to register online at: www.afdb.org. This registration procedure will significantly reduce the time to process your file. The deadline for registration is April 10, 2009.

In case Senegal does not have a diplomatic representation in your country of residence, the AfDB protocol services will provide you with the assistance necessary to obtain an entry visa upon arrival in the country. In this regard, send the first four pages of a valid passport to the AfDB External Relations and Communication Unit via email at : press@afdb.org or fax at : +216 71 10 37 52.

Given that it is challenging to find hotel accommodation in Dakar during the high season, we are recommending that, upon confirmation of your registration, you make hotel reservation from among the hotels listed in the Annual Meetings Information Bulletin which could be accessed at: www.afdb.org/am.

Be advised that the AfDB will not be responsible for the transportation and accommodation of journalists though it could, in exceptional cases, provide some form of assistance to some journalists.

We look forward to seeing you soon in Dakar.

Sincerely,

Antoinette Batumubwira

External Relations and Communication Unit Head
