Joint operation searches refugee camp in eastern Chad

NDJAMENA, Chad, January 30, 2009/African Press Organization (APO)/ — In a bid to protect and maintain the civilian and humanitarian character of refugee camps, the Détachement Intégré de Sécurité (DIS) and the United Nations’ Police conducted a joint weapons search operation in the Am Nabak refugee camp in northeastern Chad.  The search operation seized forbidden equipment including fatigues, chargers and ammunition. This is the first such operation to be conducted by the DIS, a Chadian security force recently deployed in eastern Chad.

The DIS is a special security force trained by the United Nations Mission in the Central African Republic and Chad (MINURCAT) and entirely made up of Chadian Police and Gendarmerie elements.  The DIS is entrusted with providing security to Darfur refugee camps, sites hosting Chadian internally displaced persons as well as humanitarian action on the ground
