Ethiopia / The 17th Ordinary Session of the Permanent Representatives Committee Kicks Off in Addis Ababa

 

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, January 26, 2009/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The 17th Ordinary Session of the Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC) officially opened today, Monday 26 January 2009, at the headquarters of the African Union Commission (AUC) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, under the chairmanship of Dr. Mohamed O. Maundi, Chairperson of the PRC. AUC Chairperson Mr. Jean Ping delivered an opening speech, while the Deputy Chairperson Mr. Erastus Mwencha and AU Commissioners were in attendance.

 
 

In his opening address, the Chairperson of the Commission stressed that, « this Summit will be crucial given the important decisions that will be taken with respect to the Union Government as well as the Union Audit report. It will also speed up the integration process of the continent via the concrete infrastructure projects at the regional, inter-regional and continental levels ».

 
 

Mr. Ping further pointed out that the Commission is always committed to its engagements in all the areas of development, notably, the management of human resources and finance. « I am convinced that it is only with this spirit that the Commission would consider itself a credible and efficient international public administration », the AUC Chairperson added.

 
 

Dr Maundi on his part, said the objective of the PRC meeting is to consider the draft items of the 14th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council scheduled to take place on 29 and 30 January 2009 at the African Union. He lauded his PRC peers for the work already achieved since 20 January 2009 in view of the need to ensure that all the items on their agenda are fully covered. He called on the participants to be objective and come up with a common view during their deliberation ” so as to attain the noble objectives of the PRC ».

 
 

The PRC will consider a number of issues on its agenda including the 2009 budget program, the status of the OAU/AU Treaties, the Africa-European Union dialogue, the integration of NEPAD into the AU structures and the Palestinian issue.

 
 

 
 

Participants at the PRC meeting included: the Deputy Chairperson of the AUC, Mr. Erastus Mwencha, the Commissioners of the AU, some AUC staff members and members of the media.

 
 

The PRC ends tomorrow, Tuesday 27 January 2009.
