Côte d’Ivoire / UNOCI head holds discussions with the leader of the PDCI

ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire, January 10, 2009/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Côte d’Ivoire, Y. J. Choi, met the head of the Democratic Party of Côte d’Ivoire (PDCI) Henri Konan Bédié, on Thursday in Abidjan.

The UNOCI head discussed the evolution of the Ivorian peace process with Mr. Bédié, as he had done earlier in the day with the president of the Rally of Republicans, Alassane Dramane Ouattara.

«  I am meeting all members of the Standing Consultative Framework [CPC] with a view to seeing what UNOCI and the international community can do to support the electoral process, identification and DDR, » Mr. Choi told the press at the end of the meeting.

Earlier, he highlighted the importance of these meetings, which are being held in the run-up to the UN Security Council meeting on Côte d’Ivoire, scheduled for 21 January in New York, and the next meeting of the CPC, also billed for this month.

SRSG Choi stated that the UN Security Council meeting should enable the international community to readjust, if need be, its support for the Ivorian peace process since, he admitted, « while more than three million people have been registered and identified thus far, there have been obstacles, which we shall try to overcome”.

The UNOCI head also welcomed the progress registered during the identification phase, which he described as a historic and strategic stage in the Ivorian peace process. He stated, further, that the suspicions and questions linked to “Ivoirité” (the doctrine of Ivorianness] were now a thing of the past.
