South Africa / Death of Helen Suzman

PRETORIA, South Africa, January 5, 2009/African Press Organization (APO)/ — French ministry of Foreign Affairs Daily Press Briefing

On behalf of foreign and European minister Bernard Kouchner, I want to pay tribute to the memory of Helen Suzman, who just passed away.

With her strong, appealing and courageous personality, Helen Suzman fought throughout her entire life against apartheid and to build a South Africa of justice and freedom. The moral conscience of her country, she was the first parliamentarian to visit Nelson Mandela in prison, asserting through this gesture that he embodied the hopes of all South Africans. Throughout her long parliamentary career she was a remarkably eloquent voice for liberty, equality and fraternity in the South African Parliament.

It is with deep emotion that I present my heartfelt condolences to her family and to the South African people.
