Guinea / French position on the new self-proclaimed Guinean government

CONAKRY, Guinea, December 26, 2008/African Press Organization (APO)/ — French ministry of Foreign Affairs daily press briefing

Taken questions

Q – What is the French position on the new self-proclaimed Guinean government? Does Paris still have contacts with Mr. Camara, and will it work with this de facto government? Mr. Camara promised elections, but not for at least two years. What is France’s position on this subject?

Let me recall our attachment to an orderly, peaceful and democratic institutional transition, in the shortest possible time, in order to restore the regular operation of Guinean institutions. We call on all the Guinean actors to work in this direction.

We hope that free and transparent elections will be held in the first half of 2009 so that the Guinean people may freely express its will.

A meeting for foreign representatives in Conakry will be held tomorrow at noon. Our ambassador will attend in his role as representative under France’s EU presidency.
