Chad / SRSG Victor Angelo Visits Dogdore to Assess the Humanitarian Situation

NDJAMENA, Chad, December 21, 2008/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) of the United Nations for Chad, Mr. Victor Angelo, led a mission to Dogdore over the week-end to assess the deteriorating humanitarian condition of the population in the region, and to discuss the situation with the country’s authorities.

During his visit, he met with the authorities of Dogdore, and exchanged with members of the population as well as with representatives of the Internally displaced persons (IDPs).

Since the end of September 2008, Dogdore has fallen prey to repeated attacks by armed bandits, causing all humanitarian workers to temporarily suspend their activities in the area.

Located in eastern Chad near the border with Sudan, Dogdore currently hosts some 28,000 IDPs, who are living with a local population of 4,000 people.

During his discussions with the authorities, the SRSG was informed that the Government has decided to deploy gendarmes and nomad guards in the area, with the hope that an improved security situation will bring back the humanitarian organizations.
