Conference on “Water for Agriculture and Energy in Africa: the Challenges of Climate Change” / Sirte, Libya, 15-17 December 2008

TRIPOLI, Libya, December 12, 2008/African Press Organization (APO)/ — A programme for a “Blue Revolution” harnessing Africa’s unutilized land and water resources will be examined at a pan-African conference opening in Sirte, Libya, next Monday.

The $65 billion, 20-year programme would create the irrigation and hydropower infrastructure needed to dramatically accelerate Africa’s development and provide much more food and electric energy for its fast-growing population, expected to reach two billion by the year 2050.

Delegates from 53 African are expected to adopt a joint Declaration supporting water development at the national, regional and continental levels in order to fully exploit the potentialities of Africa’s agriculture and energy sectors.

They will also examine a step-by-step Action Plan to achieve these objectives, as well as to respond to the challenges of climate change which threatens to disrupt current patterns of crop production in many parts of the continent. The Action Plan is based on individual national investment briefs prepared for each of the 53 countries by FAO together with the nations concerned.

FAO is currently chair of UN Water, the inter-agency mechanism coordinating the UN’s water-related activities.

With its population set to double by 2050, Africa needs to triple its food production in the next 40 years. It also needs to bring electricity to millions of factories and homes to spur the continent’s economic development.

The Conference is organized by FAO together with the Libyan Government, the African Union, the African Ministers’ Council on Water Development, the African Development Bank and the Economic Commission for Africa, among others.
