Cote d’Ivoire / UNOCI chief and RDR president evaluate electoral process

ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire, November 6, 2008/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Cote d’Ivoire, Y.J. Choi, on Wednesday met with the President of the Rally for Republicans (RDR) party, Alassane Dramane Ouattara.

Speaking after the encounter which lasted nearly an hour, the head of the United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire, explained to waiting journalists that he had come to brief Mr. Ouattara on the UN Security Council meeting which took place in New York last week. The two leaders also discussed the next meeting of the Permanent Consultative Framework, which is due to be hosted in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, by President Blaise Compaore.

Mr. Choi said that this was a significant moment in the implementation of the Ouagadougou Political Agreement which had already seen some notably advances such as the restoration of peace, the completion of financial arrangements for the electoral process and the adoption of a number of legal texts with regard to the organization of elections. On the other hand, the logistical challenge, which is greater than expected, still remained to be overcome. « If we do not manage to overcome this final challenge, we risk losing a lot of time in the peace process.” Mr. Choi concluded.
