Darfuri leaders network condemns attack on Kalma camp / In letter to Burkinabe Ambassador, group urges Security Council action

EL FASHER (DARFUR), Sudan, August 30, 2008/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Darfuri Leaders Network, a broad-based alliance representing Darfur diaspora organizations across the United States, today called on the Security Council to introduce a resolution condemning this week’s attack on Kalma camp in South Darfur. In a letter to Burkinabe Ambassador to the United Nations, Michel Kafando, the group also urged the council to demand full and unimpeded access to all those detained during the attack. Kafando is serving as president of the council for the month of September.

“We have watched with horror, once again, when on August 25, 2008, a well orchestrated attack planned by the Government of Sudan and conducted by forces that combined the army, security, police and Janjaweed elements was launched against unarmed IDPs living in the Kalma camp,” the DLN wrote in the letter. “Now, as a result of inaction by the world community to pressure the Government of Sudan to accept and implement the numerous U.N. Security Council resolutions, we are witnessing a continuation of the genocide of Darfurians in the camps which shelter the IDPs.”
