CAPE-TOWN, South-Africa, August 26, 2008/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The presidency: Republic of South Africa

Rev Frank Chikane, Director-General in The Presidency, has conveyed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Crime Prevention and Security Clusters to the family of Secretary of Defence January, Masilela, who died in a horrific car accident on Sunday morning.

Mr Masilela served as a Member of the Executive Council (MEC) of the Mpumalanga Provincial Government for five years and joined the Department of Defence in 1999 as the Secretary for Defence, a position he held until his untimely death.

His primary role as the Defence Secretary entailed running an effective and cost-efficient organization and act as the principal departmental advisor to the Minister on defence policy matters.

Mr Masilela was born in Mhluzi township outside Nelspruit, Mpumalanga. He left the country in 1975 for Zambia where he joined the ANC, enlisting with MK – Umkhonto weSizwe. His career in military training started in Libya and then the Soviet Union.  He underwent further training in Cuba and the former People’s Republic of Germany (East Germany).

Masilela left a legacy of hard work and sound ethics and will be sorely missed.
