Nigeria / Cameroon / Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on the transfer of authority from Nigeria to Cameroon in the

western zone of the Bakassi peninsula

ABUJA, Nigeria, August 22, 2008/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The European Union welcomes the transfer of authority in the western zone of the Bakassi

peninsula from Nigeria to Cameroon, marking the end of the handover process begun in

2006.

The European Union is pleased by the courageous decision by Nigeria and Cameroon to

resolve this territorial dispute peacefully by complying with the judgment of the

International Court of Justice of 10 October 2002 and the provisions of the Greentree

Agreement of 12 June 2006.

The European Union is closely following the security situation in the Gulf of Guinea and

expresses its gratitude to the United Nations Secretary-General and his representative for

West Africa for their involvement in the implementation of the Greentree Agreement,

which constitutes a successful example of the peaceful resolution of a border dispute.
