LUSAKA, Zambia, August 20, 2008/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The African Union – United Nations Hybrid Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) has received with sadness the news of the untimely passing away of one of Africa’s frontline leaders and president of the Republic of Zambia, His Excellency Levy Patrick Mwanawasa who was also the Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community.

UNAMID highly appreciates the role and contribution of Zambian peacekeepers and police advisers in the Darfur peace process, and is deeply touched by the demise of their Commander-in-Chief, who was their leader and inspiration.

In these trying circumstances for our Zambian comrades and their nation, Mr. Rodolphe Adada, UNAMID Joint Special Representative, and the senior leadership of the mission, want to express their deepest sympathy and present their sincerest condolences to the people and government of Zambia, and to the family of the late President Mwanawasa.
