Mali / ECOWAS organizes retreat for its ECOWAS council of the wise in Bamako

 

BAMAKO, Mali, August 19, 2008/African Press Organization (APO)/ — A three-day retreat for the ECOWAS Council of the Wise on enhancing preventive diplomacy in the ECOWAS region will begin in Bamako, the capital of Mali on Thursday, 21st August 2008.

 

The Council which is composed of eminent personalities selected from various segments of the society from the 15 Member States and diplomacy experts will participate in the retreat which is aimed at further strengthening the capacity of the Council members in mediation, conciliation and facilitation in the context of current and emerging conflict dynamics in West Africa.

 

Members of the Council will be treated to various presentations including The Council of the Wise and the ECOWAS Mechanism, Targeting the Intermediate and Root Causes of Conflict: A Case for the ECOWAS Conflict Prevention Framework as well as the ECOWAS Council of the Wise in the Early Warning and Response System.

 

They will also receive updates by the ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, the institution’s zonal bureau chiefs and special representatives on the security situation in West Africa as well as review current and emerging conflict trends in West Africa and beyond.

 

The retreat is also expected to enhance the visibility and proactive stance of Council members in local conflict management with emphasis on the on-going tensions in Casamance in Senegal, the Niger Delta of Nigeria, Guinea, Northern Ghana, Mali and Niger.

 

The exercise which provides the Commission room to appraise and review the composition and mandate of the Council will also enable the members to improve their information technology skills.

 

The inauguration of the Council in 2001 is part of ECOWAS' creative means to tackle the problem of conflicts and promote good governance in its region through preventive diplomacy.
