Niger / Five ministers commits to national gender policy


NIAMEY, Niger, August 18, 2008/African Press Organization (APO)/ — On the 8th of July, The Minister of foreign Affairs of Niger, Mme Aïchatou Mindaudou and the minister of Women’s Promotion and Protection, Mme Bibata Barry Niandou, received MDG3 Torches and thereby committed themselves to doing ‘something extra’. In total, five ministers from the Niger Government attended the Torch-event and thereby showing an overall dedication to the empowerment of women and the MDG3 campaign.

The MDG3 Torch was handed over in Ouagadougou by the Danish Ambassador to Niger, Mogens Pedersen. Moreover, the event was attended by different important representatives from the national and international institutions in Niger.

The two Torch receivers, Aïchatou Mindaoudou and Bibata Barry Niandou committed themselves to approve and implement a national gender policy to ensure gender equality. This commitment was accompanied by another commitment to the establishment and strengthening relevant government mechanisms to implement all international conventions for achieving MDG3 on gender equality and the empowerment of women.
