United Nations Mine Action Office / Abyei cleared of UXO

KARTHUM, Sudan, August 12, 2008/African Press Organization (APO)/ — UNMAO has successfully cleared Abyei of unexploded ordnance

(UXO). UN agencies and NGOs will now be able to return to the area and provide muchneeded support to the remaining population and to returnees.

Clashes between members of the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Sudan People’s

Liberation Army devastated Abyei last May, and forced up to 50,000 people to flee the area.

As well as assisting the International Committee of the Red Cross in their immediate

response, UNMAO sent its partner Mine Tech International to conduct an emergency survey

for potential UXO. They systematically removed and destroyed all devices found in battle

areas.

UNMAO also sent Mine Risk Education teams to Al Muglad and Agkok (respectively north

and south of Abyei) to provide information on the prevention of UXO accidents to people

displaced by fighting.

Finally on 6 August, UNMAO tasked the Egyptian Military Demining Company to destroy a

stockpile of 4,800 abandoned munitions. As Suleiman Nyamwaya, UNMAO’s operations

officer who attended the stockpile destruction put it, “this completed the clearance of UXO in

Abyei and will enable the safe return of displaced families to the area”.
