UNAMID director of communication and public information division assumes functions

 

EL FASHER (DARFUR), Sudan, August 11, 2008/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Mr. Kemal Saïki arrived in Al-Fasher on 28 July 2008, to assume the functions of Director of Communication and Public Information of UNAMID, the African Union – United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur.

 

Before joining UNAMID, Kemal Saïki, an Algerian national, was Director of Public Information and Director of the Office of the Spokesperson and Media Relations in MONUC, the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He was previously Chief of Public Information and Spokesperson of UNAMSIL, the UN Mission in Sierra Leone, with several stays in Liberia, at the time of the creation of UNMIL, the UN Mission in that country. He also served in Bujumbura, where he created the Public Information Division at the start of ONUB, the UN Mission in Burundi, and was ONUB first Spokesperson. Prior to his posting to Sierra Leone, Kemal Saïki had assumed the responsibilities of Institutional Communications Manager at the African Development Bank (AfDB) in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

 

Kemal Saïki started his UN career in 1994, first in Vienna, Austria, as Chief Public Information and Spokesperson of UNIDO, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, then as UNIDO’s Senior Liaison Officer in Geneva, Switzerland. He has also held the position of Deputy Head of Civil Affairs in UNTAES, the UN Transitional Administration for Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Sirmium, based in Vukovar, Croatia.

 

At the beginning of his professional life, Kemal Saïki was a free-lance photographer and a radio and print journalist. After serving as an army officer, he joined the External Relations Directorate of Sonatrach, the Algerian National Oil Company. He went on to work in the Department of Information and International Relations of the Organization of the Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC) in Kuwait, and as Head of Communication and Spokesperson for the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), in Vienna, Austria.

 

Holding Bachelor’s Degrees in linguistics from the University of Algiers and a Master’s Degree in International Relations from Webster University, Saint-Louis, Mo. (USA), Kemal Saïki is an alumnus of the Energy Seminar, Oxford Energy Institute (Saint-Catherine’s College), received management training from the Institut des Hautes Études Commerciales de Montréal and speaks French, English and Arabic.

 

Married to Nelly, with three children, he is a keen practitioner of photography, sky-diving, target shooting and rugby. An avid reader and student of military history, he has by professional obligation and personal inclination a passion for information.
