Mauritania / European Union / Statement from the Presidency of the Council of the European Union on the situation in Mauritania

BRUSSELS, Kingdom of Belgium, August 7, 2008/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Presidency of the Council of the European Union utterly condemns the act of force perpetrated by General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz in Mauritania.

It recalls that President Abdallahi was elected in March 2007 following free and fair elections. The current political tensions in Mauritania must be resolved within the institutional framework resulting from the transition to democracy. The Presidency thus calls for constitutional order to be restored as soon as possible.

The Presidency of the Council of the European Union will continue to monitor the political situation in the country in close collaboration with the African Union.

It will, in particular, continue to ensure the safety of European Union nationals.
