HIV/AIDS epidemic / African leaders call for redoubled efforts to prevent the spread of HIV / President Mogae launches “Champions for an HIV-free Generation”

Festus Mogae, the former President of Botswana, highly praised for his fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic, will launch “Champions for an HIV-free Generation”, a group of renowned and outspoken African leaders calling for their peers to step up dramatically efforts to prevent the spread of HIV and initiate a dialogue in changing behavioral and societal norms to counter the still staggering and devastating incidence and prevalence rates in Africa.

 
 

The group of champions will at the initial stage include Joaquim Chissano, former President of Mozambique, Benjamin Mkapa, former President of Tanzania, Kenneth Kaunda, former President of Zambia, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Ethiopian super model Liya Kebede, South African Supreme Court of Appeal Justice Edwin Cameron and Professor Miriam Were, chair of the Kenyan National AIDS Control Council.

 
 

“Champions for an HIV-free Generation” has been endorsed by UNAIDS, the World Bank, the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and the World Health Organization.
