Côte d’Ivoire / UNOCI head receives the special rapporteur on toxic waste

ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire, August 4, 2008/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Côte d’Ivoire, Y.J. Choi, had a meeting on Monday with the Special Rapporteur on the adverse effects of the illicit movement and dumping of toxic and dangerous products and wastes on the enjoyment of human rights, Mr Okechukwu Ibeanu.

Mr Ibeanu, who subsequently met the Principal Deputy Special Representative, Abou Moussa, stated that this morning’s discussions, which took place at the headquarters of the UN Operation in Côte d’Ivoire, fell within the framework of contacts with the top officials of the misson. They were aimed, he said, at explaining the nature of his one–week visit in Côte d’Ivoire and finding out about the activities and measures undertaken by the UN country team to manage the toxic waste situation.

« The information session focussed on measures taken by the country team at the time of the incidents in order to protect UN members of staff, and the assistance granted by ONUCI to the Government of Côte d’Ivoire,” Mr Ibeanu said.

The Special Rapporteur added that he hoped the meetings he was scheduled to have with the country’s authorities, communities and other affected persons would give him a broader picture of the measures taken when the Probo Koala ship dumped toxic waste in Côte d’Ivoire in 2006.
