African Union / Water and sanitation at the centre of the eleventh ordinary session of the assembly of the African Union

 

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, June 20, 2008/African Press Organization (APO)/ –The Eleventh Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union Heads of State and Government is scheduled to take place from 30 June to 1st July 2008, in Sharm El-Sheikh, Arab Republic of Egypt.

 

The opening ceremony of the Charm El Sheikh Summit would include an introductory Remark by the Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture of the African Union, remarks by the Chair of the United Nations Secretary General’s Advisory Board on Water and sanitation (UNSGGAD) and a presentation of the theme by H.E. Mr. Hosny Mubarak, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt.

 

Holding under the theme: “Meeting the Millennium Development Goals on Water and Sanitation”, the up-coming AU Summit will feature the Adoption of the single legal instrument on the merger of the Court of Justice and the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights of the African Union; Appointment of the Members of the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) and of the Judges of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR), as well as the status of implementation of the regional and continental agenda of integration.

 

Food Crisis in Africa, the status report on malaria in Africa and the promotion of maternal and child health in Africa are some of the topical issues to be discussed by the African Heads of State during the Sharm El-Sheikh Summit.

 

Some reports to be considered during the Summit include: the Report on the activities of Peace and Security Council and the State of Peace and Security in Africa; Report of the Chairperson of NEPAD Heads of State and Government Implementation Committee; Progress Report on the Implementation of the outcome of the May 2006 Abuja special Summit on HIV/AIDS, TB and other related infectious diseases; the Progress Report on the Implementation of Decision Assembly/AU/Dec.155 (VIII) on the Reform of the United Nations; and the Report of the 1st Meeting of the Committee of Twelve Heads of State and Government on the Union Government.

 

On the other hand, the Assembly is expected to consider a number of issues proposed by Member States. These include: Agricultural Development and Reduction of Food Prices; Cooperation between the United Nations and the African Union; and the Afro-Arab Cooperation amongst others.

 

 

Worth recalling that, the 11th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government would be preceded by the 16th Ordinary Session of the Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC), scheduled for the 24-25 June 2008 and the 13th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council scheduled to take place from 27- 28 June 2008

 

Attached are the draft agendas of the 16th Ordinary Session of the Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC), the 13th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council and the 11th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government.
