Zimbabwe / Communique on the second round of the presidential election in Zimbabwe

HARARE, Zimbabwe, June 13, 2008/African Press Organization (APO)/ — At the invitation of the Government of the Republic of Zimbabwe and subsequent to the visits that the Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU) undertook to South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe in early May 2008, the Commission is planning to dispatch a sizeable team of observers to Zimbabwe, to observe the second round of the presidential election due to be held on 27 June 2008. This team, which will be lead by H.E. Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah,

former President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, will start arriving in Zimbabwe

from 15 June 2008.

As stressed by the Chairperson of the Commission during the visits he

undertook in May 2008, it is important that the second round of the presidential

election be held in a peaceful, free, transparent and fair manner.

In this respect, the Commission is concerned by the reported incidents of

violence and disruption of electoral activities, and stresses the need for swift and

effective action to address the situation. The Commission calls on all concerned to

ensure that the best possible conditions are created for the holding of the second

round of the presidential election.

On its part, the Commission, working with the Zimbabwean leaders and

stakeholders, as well as with SADC and its Mediator, will spare no effort to ensure

that the ongoing process is successfully completed.
