Kampala, 22 May 2008

The Registrar of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Ms Silvana Arbia is today paying a visit to Kampala, Uganda. She will meet with representatives from the local authorities, non-governmental and international organisations, and the media, from the war affected communities of the Acholi, Teso, Lango and Madi regions.

This is the first visit to Uganda of Ms Arbia in her position as the new ICC Registrar. She was elected for a five-year term earlier this year succeeding Mr Bruno Cathala.

Ms Arbia, as head of the Registry, is the principle administrative officer of the Court and exercises her functions under the authority of the President. The core function of the Registry is to provide administrative and operational support to all organs of the Court. It has specific responsibilities with respect to ensuring victims’ participation, the protection of witnesses and victims, and support for defence. Furthermore, the Registry plays a key role in ensuring proceedings are public, and is also responsible for the establishment and management of the Court’s field operations.
