Cape Verde / Pedro Verona Rodrigues Pires received in audience the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for West Africa, Mr. Said Djinnit


UNOWA – Dakar, 8 May 2008: Following the conclusion of the 4th Working Session of the International Contact Group for Guinea-Bissau (ICG-GB) held in Praia on 5 May 2008, H.E. Pedro Verona Rodrigues Pires, President of the Republic of Cape Verde, received in audience the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for West Africa, Mr. Said Djinnit; the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas; and the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Guinea-Bissau, Mr. Shola Omoregie; to exchange views on the outcome of the ICG-GB meeting.

Their discussions focused on the challenges facing the subregion and Guinea-Bissau in particular. All agreed on the urgent need to take concrete action to address the current food crisis, with President Pires emphasizing that domestic policies should aim for achieving self-sufficiency in agriculture.

The participants also discussed the current political situation in Guinea Bissau, and considered how the international community, regional organizations and African leaders could play a good offices role in mediating between the various parties.

All concurred on the importance of adopting a concerted approach in tackling the problems facing West Africa and of coordinating any initiatives taken to resolve regional issues.
