SECURITY COUNCIL HIGH-LEVEL MEETING ON PEACE AND SECURITY IN AFRICA

SECRETARY-GENERAL’S PRESS ENCOUNTER PRIOR TO ATTENDING SECURITY COUNCIL HIGH-LEVEL MEETING ON PEACE AND SECURITY IN AFRICA

UNHQ, 16 APRIL 2008

SG: Today we have the Korean President [Lee Myung Bak] visiting the

United Nations, as I am also coming from Korea. We had very good

discussions with him. I was very much encouraged by his strong

commitment to work more for all United Nations activities, commensurate

with the Korean Government’s economic development and political maturity

in the area of peacekeeping operations and Official Development

Assistance. All in all, I had very good discussions with him. He has

expressed his strong support for the centrality of the United Nations,

and his intention to participate more actively in all the works of the

United Nations, including the eradication of poverty, Official

Development Assistance, Millennium Development Goals, and in that

regard, I am deeply encouraged by his strong commitment.

Q: On North Korea, Sir?

SG: We also discussed the nuclear issue and the situation on the Korean

Peninsula, and how to promote a better inter-Korean relationship. I am

also committed to facilitating, as Secretary-General of the United

Nations, to the ongoing peace process as well as implementation of

nuclear issues on the Korean Peninsula. Thank you.
