Commonwealth Secretary-General Sharma to visit Uganda

15 April 2008

Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma will arrive in Uganda on Wednesday 16 April on his first overseas trip since taking up office on 1 April 2008.

He will meet Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, the Commonwealth Chairperson-in-Office, to exchange views on matters of interest in the Commonwealth.

These include how to take forward mandates agreed by leaders during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Kampala last year, which cover transforming societies for social, economic and political development; protecting the environment and dealing with the consequences of climate change; promoting the reform of international institutions.

“I look forward to conferring with President Museveni on issues at the heart of the Commonwealth’s twin agenda of democracy and development,” Mr Sharma said ahead of his visit.

Mr Sharma will call on Foreign Minister Sam Kutesa, House Speaker Edward Ssekandi and leader of the opposition in parliament Professor Morris Ogenga-Latigo. He is also due to speak to representatives of civil society and business.
