KENYA / STATEMENT BY CHAIRPERSON OF THE COMMISSION ON THE SITUATION IN KENYA

STATEMENT BY CHAIRPERSON OF THE COMMISSION ON THE SITUATION IN KENYA

The Chairperson of the AU Commission, Alpha Omar Konaré, expresses

his concern at the continued impasse between the Kenyan parties over the

appointment of the coalition government. The delays in appointing a coalition

government will inevitably delay a return to normalcy in Kenya, and is also of

concern to the rest of the region.

The Chairperson reiterates the call made by Mr. Kofi Annan, the Chair of

the Panel of Eminent African Personalities, that the parties implement the

National Accord and Reconciliation Agreement scrupulously.

While the signing of the Agreement on 28 February marked a significant

milestone in the peaceful resolution of the Kenyan crisis, its final success is

dependent on the full implementation of all aspects of the Agreement by the

Kenyan parties. In this regard, the Chairperson calls on President Mwai Kibaki

and Hon. Raila Odinga to reach agreement speedily on the number and

composition of the government, in accordance with the letter and spirit of the

National Accord and Reconciliation Agreement, and to appoint a government that

will meet the needs and aspirations of the Kenyan people.
