Foreign Secretary statement on Kenya (09/04/2008)

“‘I am dismayed by the latest turn of events in Kenya.  We strongly supported Kofi Annan’s effortswhich brokered agreement to genuine power-sharing.  We supported his statement last week that theCabinet should be shared equally with appropriate portfolio balance.  All sides must be prepared to makeconcessions to allow this to happen, including President Kibaki’s supportersceding some powerful portfolios.  We urgeKenya’sleaders to agree a power-sharing Cabinet that will serve all Kenyanseffectively in order that the country can move forward and start to deal withthe underlying issues that fuelled so much of the violence in the post-electionperiod.”
