Statement by Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the Implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in Sudan

1. The Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), which was signed in Nairobi, Kenya on January 9, 2005, marks its third anniversary today, and Japan welcomes the fact that so far the CPA has been implemented by the efforts of both the NCP and SPLM, which signed the Agreement. Japan especially welcomes the fact that the political confrontation between the two parties over the CPA was settled after several talks, leading to the resumption of the process toward further implementation of the Agreement.
    
   
2. Peace and stability in the whole of Sudan would not have been realized without the CPA, and Japan recognizes that the steady promotion of the CPA will contribute to the solution of the conflict in Darfur. Japan urges both parties to the CPA, through their partnership, to steadily implement the provisions stipulated in the Agreement.
    
   
3. Japan has already extended a total of more than 200 million dollars for the consolidation of peace in Sudan, and moreover, as the country that will hold the G8 Presidency and also host TICAD IV in May this year, Japan will further promote its support for Sudan including the implementation of the CPA
