Outgoing UN Envoy honoured for role in consolidating peace in Liberia

Gbarnga, Liberia – The people of Liberia’s central region of Bong County have honoured the outgoing United Nations Envoy, Mr. Alan Doss, with one of their highest traditional awards, in recognition of his role in restoring peace and stability to Liberia. Mr. Doss was gowned as honorary Paramount Chief of Bong County and given a special certificate of appreciation.

Conferring the honour on Mr. Doss, who is leaving Liberia soon to assume new duties as the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Bong County Superintendent, Ranney Jackson, described the UN envoy as someone who had made an invaluable contribution to the peace of Bong County and Liberia.

“I appreciate greatly these honours. But perhaps the greatest gift that you can give me is to keep the peace” SRSG Doss said as he thanked the leaders and people of Bong County. He recalled the suffering and trials that Liberia has gone through during the civil conflicts, and urged all Liberians to embrace peace.

Mr. Doss also paid tribute to his colleagues in UNMIL, saying, “I am deeply touched and moved by these honours because they come to me unexpectedly but they are not for me alone – they recognize the work of all the UN colleagues here in Liberia.”

The departing UN Envoy informed the people that his successor, Ms. Ellen Margrethe Løj, a Danish diplomat, has a strong background in development, an expertise that’s much needed to move Liberia forward. “She will bring the determination, skills, and the engagement to make sure that the UN continues to provide you the support you need,” he noted.

Earlier Mr. Doss laid a wreath at a Cenotaph erected by the Bangladeshi Contingent to honour seven of their colleagues who lost their lives while on duty in Liberia. He praised the Bangladeshi contingent for their hard work and sacrifice towards the restoration of peace to Bong County, an area of sensitivity and strategic importance. “Your understanding, contacts and sympathy with the local people have helped to stabilize this area” Mr. Doss said. “As a result, you have successfully managed a number of potentially very difficult situations which could have easily got out of hand and set the country back.” He also echoed the same appreciation when he met with members of the UNMIL Nigerian Formed Police Unit who are stationed in Gbarnga.

Sector Three Contingent Commander, Brig.-Gen. Monawar Hossain commended the exemplary leadership of Mr. Doss and pledged the determination of his troops to continue to work towards the restoration of lasting peace to Liberia.
