Spindelegger shocked about assault on UN in Somalia / UN staff have paid for their commitment to peace with their lives

VIENNA, Austria, June 21, 2013/African Press Organization (APO)/ “Attacking innocent people who have dedicated all their energy to peace in Somalia is an act of cowardice and shows the assaulters’ contempt for mankind”, Austrian Vice-Chancellor and Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger said and wholeheartedly condemned yesterday’s attack on United Nations institutions in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, that cost the lives of 18 people.

“The United Nations make an important contribution to security in Somalia and to the country’s development. Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the victims who have paid the highest possible price for their commitment and dedication to a peaceful future of Somalia”, Spindelegger continued.

There have been attacks on UN institutions world-wide before; such as on the UN headquarters in Baghdad in 2003 or the UN mission in the Nigerian capital of Abuja in 2011, and Afghanistan has even seen repeated attacks on United Nations offices in the past few years.
