INFORMED by the background and context of the 2007/8 challenges to electoral processes and the violence that occurred, CONCERNED that the current prevailing political campaigns may once again polarize the nation with possible resort to violence, and MOTIVATED by the needs to: prevent any possible outbreak of politically instigated violence, ensure smooth and successful transition, and promote national political reconciliation and unity, a number of renowned Kenyan personalities have come together to form the Group of Concerned Kenyans Initiative. This panel is convened by Lt. General Daniel Opande and some of the members include Mr. Abbas Gullet, Mr. Kulei Joshua, Mr. Kiboro Wilfred and Mr. Paul Gondi.

This initiative seeks to strengthen efforts towards peaceful, transparent and credible elections. It will create a high level mediation mechanism to support election preparedness and put in place violence prevention mechanisms. It will create a mechanism for high-level engagement between political and other actors to ensure the building of consensus on contentious issues, facilitating political agreements and ensuring public confidence that political processes can be conducted non-violently.
