Radio Journalist Dies for Gun Shot Wounds
MOGADISHU, Somalia, October 29, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ – A Radio journalist dies of wounds sustained on Sunday evening, 28 October 2012, becoming the seventeenth killed in this year.
Mohamed Mohamud, aka Turyare, producer and Webmaster of Radio Shabelle was fatally wounded on 21 October after he was attacked on his way back home in Hawo Tako neighborhood of Wadajir district in Mogadishu. Two men with pistols reportedly fired at the journalist and three bullets hit his stomach.
Mohamud, 22, was immediately admitted at Mogadishu’s Madina hospital and his wounds were not life-threatening, according to medical doctors. But his situation suddenly deteriorated on Saturday and there were plans to evacuate him abroad for proper medical treatment. Sadly he passed away at around 20:15 hrs local time.
“It is extremely deplorable that Mohamed Mohamud Turyare died for gun shot wounds,” said Omar Faruk Osman, NUSOJ Secretary General. “We reproach such an act whose primary intention was to eliminate Mohamud and we offer our heartfelt condolences to his family and colleagues.”
Mohamed Mohamud’s death again underscores the hostile environment in which journalists operate in Somalia.
