Canada Welcomes Sudan-South Sudan Oil Deal, Urges Continued Talks

OTTAWA, Canada, August 6, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:

“Canada welcomes reports that Sudan and South Sudan have reached an understanding on financial arrangements for oil exports.

“We recognize the spirit of compromise necessary to reach this agreement, but call on both sides to use this momentum and continue to negotiate comprehensive solutions to all outstanding bilateral issues.

“Canada remains deeply concerned about the lack of humanitarian access to populations in need of life-saving assistance in Sudan’s South Kordofan and Blue Nile states.

“Since 2006, Canada has contributed more than $900 million to help alleviate suffering and promote democracy and the respect for human rights. Canada’s contribution has helped bring about improvements in the lives of Sudanese and South Sudanese people as they rebuild from decades of conflict.”
