Statement by the Spokesperson of High Representative Catherine Ashton on the election of Mohammed Morsi as the President of Egypt
BRUSSELS, Kingdom of Belgium, June 25, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The spokesperson of Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement today:
“High Representative Catherine Ashton welcomes the peaceful conduct of Presidential elections and congratulates Mohammed Morsi on his election as the President of Egypt. This is a major milestone in Egypt’s democratic transition and an historic moment for the country and the region.
The High Representative looks forward to engaging with President Morsi and his executive, which she trusts will be inclusive and representative of Egypt’s diversity. In this regard, the High Representative encourages the President-elect to reach out to all other political and social groups.”
