PRESS CONFERENCE: Donation of Mobile Labs to Tanzania to Detect Counterfeit Medicines / Fight against Schistosomiasis

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania, February 24, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ WHY: The tropical worm disease schistosomiasis is the most important parasitic disease after malaria. It is estimated that more than 200 million people are infected worldwide and that around 200,000 die from it each year. In cooperation with the World Health Organization, the German pharmaceutical, chemical and life science company Merck wants to eliminate schistosomiasis in Africa. It also plans to intensify its efforts to combat the disease in Tanzania.

Furthermore, five so-called Minilabs will be presented to the Tanzanian Health Minister. These mobile compact laboratories are globally unique for their ability to detect counterfeit medicines quickly and reliably.
