Libya’s Permanent Representative to the AU bids Farewell to the Chairperson

 

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, October 26, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Dr. Jean Ping, today, 26 October 2011, received in his office at AUC Headquarters in Addis Ababa, the Permanent Representative of Libya to the African Union (AU), Ambassador Ali Abdallah Awidan, who had come to bid him farewell at the end of his tenure.

 

The Chairperson commended the outgoing Permanent Representative, who, for several years, served as Dean of African Ambassadors and the entire Diplomatic Corps in Ethiopia, for his laudable work in promoting the goals and ideals of the African Union.

 

Dr Ping seized this opportunity to reiterate the continued commitment of the AU to support the Libyan people and work with the new authorities towards genuine national reconciliation and the achievement of an inclusive transition leading to the establishment of a new democratic dispensation.

 

Chairperson Ping informed the outgoing Permanent Representative that following the decision of the Peace and Security Council on 20 October 2011, the African Union is in the process of opening a Liaison Office in Tripoli. The new office will be headed by a Special Representative.

 

On his part, Ambassador Awidan thanked the Chairperson and the entire AUC leadership for the cooperation accorded him during his tenure. He seized the opportunity to extend to his counterparts in the AU Permanent Representatives Committee his gratitude for the support given him and the strong collegial spirit that enabled the Committee (PRC) to support the work of the AUC.

 

The Chairperson awarded a certificate of appreciation to the outgoing Permanent Representative, in recognition of his valuable contribution to the collective efforts geared towards enhancing the capacity of the AU to meet the multiple challenges that face the Continent.
