EAC’ CONDOLENCES – PROF. WANGARI MAATHAI

ARUSHA, Tanzania, September 29, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — On behalf of the East African Community, I extend heartfelt condolences to the Government and People of Kenya, the Family, Relatives and Friends of the late Professor Wangari Maathai. I would like to record our sense of deep loss at the passing on of this towering figure of our time. It is indeed a sad day for Kenya, East Africa, the African continent and indeed the international community at large whom she served with great determination, dedication and distinction.

She rose from a humble village girl and scaled the tallest heights of international summitry, contribution and recognition, winning a place at the table in the rarefied company of the Nobel Laureates, among the best, the brightest and the most courageous and passionate in shaping the course of world history. We in East Africa will remember her for doing our region proud when she won the Nobel Prize. Humanity at large will forever cherish her memory, with love, respect and admiration for embracing its cause with great zeal and valour.

Rarely in the history has such a one emerged that made such a resounding impact with their work and sacrifices made in the cause so comprehensive and diverse in its scope, embracing from the cherished values of human compassion and dignity; human rights, and social justice to regional peace and international security, environmental protection and nature conservation, all rolled into one.
