Italian Development Cooperation has arranged a humanitarian flight to transfer 25 Libyan citizens injured in the fighting in their country to Italy

ROME, Italy, September 28, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — At the instructions of Foreign Minister Franco Frattini, Italian Development Cooperation, in close cooperation with the Ministry of Defence, has arranged a humanitarian flight to transfer 25 Libyan citizens injured in the fighting in their country to Italy. The initiative is a response to a request from the Prime Minister of Libya’s National Transitional Council (NTC), Mahmoud Jibril.

The Air Force C-130 took off early this afternoon (28 September) from Pratica di Mare. It is headed for Misurata, where – assisted by military medics and Development Cooperation personnel – the 25 patients will board the aircraft for transfer to Italy.

Thanks to the offer of help from Lazio Region, the Libyan patients will be treated at the San Camillo Forlanini Hospital in Rome.

The operation is the 10th in Italy’s “air-lift” programme to transfer civilian victims of the Libyan conflict and then return them home, and to bring humanitarian supplies to the country. It is a further, significant sign of solidarity towards the Libyan people, as well as being an example of effective collaboration between the institutions involved.
