
Sweden / The Minister for International Development Cooperation, Ms Gunilla Carlsson, visits the Horn of Africa
STOCKHOLM, Sweden, August 30, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Today the Minister for International Development Cooperation, Ms Gunilla Carlsson, arrived in the severely drought affected Horn of Africa region. During her trip to Kenya and Somalia, the Minister is following up on delivery of Swedish humanitarian assistance to the affected countries on the Horn of Africa is.
Sweden is among the top five humanitarian donor countries to the region, and has to date contributed with more than 700 million Swedish kronor (approximately $ 116 million) during 2011.
In addition to visiting affected areas, Ms Gunilla Carlsson also meets with the humanitarian actors working to channel assistance from Sweden and other countries. The discussions will focus on both short-term and longer-term solutions to the humanitarian crisis, as well as on how the assistance can reach people in need as rapid and effective as possible. The visit to the region is undertaken together with the UN High Commissioner for the Refugees, Mr Antonio Guterres.
